The WHYALLA MALE-OUT COMMUNITY FUN DAY is fast approaching. The day is being held to coincide with National Men’s Health Week which runs from June 11-17, 2012. The Whyalla event is being held at the University of SA Whyalla Campus on Nicolson Avenue from 11:00am – 3:00pm on Sunday June 17th. The Male-Out day is intended to celebrate the contribution of men and boys to the Whyalla community as well as to raise awareness about men’s health. There are lots of free displays and exhibits to entice the whole community but men and boys in particular. The event starts of at 9:30am with a fun run / walk coordinated by the Whyalla Harriers.
All of the emergency services will be in attendance displaying their full range of emergency equipment and BIS are bringing their 50 tonne crane for a close up look. There will be Go-Karts on display together with a large selection of vintage and drag cars together with a display by the 4×4 Club. Bob’s Mitre 10 will be demonstrating some new power tools and The Fisheries officers and the FISH Care team will be there to give you information about fishing in the local area. Several model and hobby clubs will also have displays including Whyalla’s Model Railway, Aero and Astronomy clubs, the Whyalla Dart’s Club and the Orienteering Club.
A number of local health groups will be displaying their wares and the Whyalla Community Health Team will be running a Pit Stop Men’s Health check station which takes a mechanical view of health. Participants get a Pit Stop service that includes checks on the chassis (hip to waist ratio); torsion (flexibility); exhaust (smoking); fuel additives (alcohol consumption); oil pressure (blood pressure); spark plugs (testicles); duco (skin cancer); extractor (colorectal cancer) and shock absorbers (coping skills). Participants even get a roadworthy certificate at the finish.
Several guest speakers will be giving short presentations about mental health, prostate disease, sleep apnoea and osteoporosis, men’s sheds and other items of interest to both men and women. Students and staff from the School of Nursing at the University will be offering additional health checks and the Engineering department will be demonstrating some cool toys. TAFE and Uni staff will be on hand to provide career and training advice.
The kids are well catered for with free bouncy castles, face painting and pony rides. There will be a wide variety of food and drinks on offer and there is a free raffle with great prizes including a signed crows Football and Guernsey, a BBQ, accommodation at Whyalla’s Quest apartments as well as Westland and Stratco gift vouchers.
So ladies rope-up your men folk and bring them and family and friends for a free, fun day out on June 17th at the Uni campus.
